The Mandalorian Finally Reveals What Darth Vader Meant About 'Disintegrations'

Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers for episode 2 of The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian Nods Back to 'Empire Strikes Back'
  • A big action scene on The Mandalorian made reference to a highly memorable line from The Empire Strikes Back.
  • The episode finally paid off on Darth Vader's "No disintigrations" directive to Boba Fett.
  • The Mandalorian also makes clear that weapons, and his arsenal, are integral to the Mandalorian people.

For a character with only about six minutes of screen time over two films to become as iconic as the Star Wars villain Boba Fett has, you need to have some cool stuff going your way. And when Darth Vader, himself arguably the most popular villain in film history, had to specifically warn Mr. Fett to his face, with a finger wag, in The Empire Strikes Backwell, that'll help. "No disintegrations," he tells him. Given that Boba Fett was wearing Mandalorian armor, that gave the new Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian a chance, 39 years later, to finally show us what a disintegration looks like, and....it's pretty cool.

In an early battle scene with the Jawas, The Mandalorian points his rifle at a few of them, fires, and they literally combust. At firstgiven that this is Star Wars, and aliens and monsters and creatures are all things that just existwe kind of think that maybe this is just what happens when Jawas get shot. Who's to say they wouldn't blow up?

It's only later, as the wise Kuiil and The Mandalorian are walking toward the Jawa camp that we're reminded of Darth Vader's famous instruction toward Boba Fett. "They really don't like you for some reason," Kuiil says. "Well, I did disintegrate a few of them," The Mandalorian appropriately admits.

"I'm a Mandalorian," he eventually says. "Weapons are my religion." And given the collection we've already seen on his ship, it's safe to say that we'll have a few more cool bounty hunting gadgets shown off in the coming weeks of The Mandalorian.
