Nigerians divided over Aisha Buhari's N10m watch

Mrs. Aisha Buhari has created a little storm with her adorning a wristwatch said to cost over N10 million to her husband, Muhammadu Buhari's presidential inauguration.

Mrs Aisha Buhari and the controversial watch

Since the photo of Nigeria's First Lady, Aisha Buhari, spotting an expensive Cartier Baignoire Folle 18-Carat White Gold Diamond Ladies Watch, said to cost over N10 million, during her husband's inauguration, there has been a lot of debate going round.

The photo has since become viral and typical of Nigerians, the watch has been creating several  talking points with many questioning her husband, Muhammadu Buhari's, resolve to run an austere government since his wife could wear such expensive piece of ornament.

But those who are in her support are of the view that there is no big deal actually over the watch since the photo was not taken while her husband is in power and she could either afford the watch or it could have been a gift.

According to investigations by Breaking Times, the 18-Carat Gold Watch cost a whopping £34,500 and going by the current CBN foreign exchange rate of N303 to £1, is N10, 453, 000.

The Cartier Baignoire Folle 18-Carat White Gold Diamond Ladies Watch comes in a case made of rhodiumised white gold set with brilliant-cut diamonds. On the side of the case is an octagonal crown set with a diamond. The case is 44mm high, 35mm wide and 10mm thick and is covered by glare-proof sapphire crystal glass.

More stringent opposition voices have been harping on Buhari's declarations during his campaigns that he was so broke that he could not afford the money needed to buy the presidential nomination form and had to resort to borrowing from a bank.

The President rode on the wave of his modesty, pastoral lifestyle and avowed anti-corruption stance to the crest of power.
