17 men in court over alleged harassment of members of public

The judge, Mr Umar Kagarko, admitted 16 of the defendants to bail in the sum of N20,000 each with a reliable surety each in like sum.

The men are: Bello Rabiu, Mohammed Suleiman, Hassan Umar, Abubakar Hamza, Gayi Alkazi, Thomas Okafor, Adamu Mohammed, Salisu Ibrahim, Abdulkadir Adamu.

Others include: Abubakar Aliyu, Shamson Abdullahi, Shaibu Garba, Abdullahi Musa, Oving Christopher, Suleiman Musa, Abdullahi Haruna and Muazu Sani.

The defendants aged between 18 years to 40 years and of no fixed address in Durumi area, are facing trial on two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and continuous nuisance.

They all pleaded not guilty.

The judge, Mr Umar Kagarko, admitted 16 of the defendants to bail in the sum of N20, 000 each with a reliable surety each in like sum.

He, however, freed the third defendant after he produced an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), staff identity card.

The judge adjourned hearing in the matter till June 27.

The prosecutor, Mr Donatus Abah, had told the court that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Durumi, had led a surveillance patrol team and arrested the suspects on April 26.

“Several information of their constant harassment of members of the public who are law abiding citizens led to their arrest,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said that the offence was contrary to Sections 969 (1) and 199 of the Penal Code.
