Casino Royale, the new James Bond
The 21st opus in the James Bond saga, it marks the start of a new era for Agent 007, played for the first time by Daniel Craig. More realistic, darker and more violent, it presents a modern James Bond, vulnerable, but also brutal and more determined than ever. In this episode, mixing action and romance, he confronts Le Chiffre, an international terrorist banker, in a high-risk poker game at Casino Royale. He is aided by the beautiful and mysterious Vesper Lynd, an employee of the British Treasury.
A box-office success, it has grossed over $600 million worldwide and won numerous awards. And if, after seeing the film, you're craving a live casino game, head to the web to play with the many live titles from a serious and reliable platform.
Casino, an uncompromising portrait of Las Vegas
Directed by Martin Scorsese, this is the fourth collaboration between the filmmaker and Robert De Niro, following Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and Raging Bull. The film is based on the book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese.
Sam Rothstein, a talented bookmaker, is sent to Las Vegas by the Chicago Mafia to run the Tangiers casino, secretly financed by the truckers' union. He is assisted by his childhood friend Nicky Santoro. But Sam falls in love with Ginger McKenna, a prostitute who turns his head. Meanwhile, the FBI investigates the casino's illegal activities and the mafia begins to lose patience.
Epic and intimate, it depicts with documentary precision the world of gambling, money and power in 1970s Las Vegas. Scorsese uses virtuoso direction, alternating dizzying sequence shots, flashbacks, voice-overs and an eclectic soundtrack. He shows the excess, luxury, violence and corruption that reign in Sin City, but also the fragility and solitude of the characters.
Ocean's Eleven, cinema's coolest heist
Remake of the 1960 film The Unknown Man of Las Vegas, starring Frank Sinatra, the film features a team of eleven thieves, led by Danny Ocean, who decide to rob three Las Vegas casinos owned by the same man, Terry Benedict.
Featuring an all-star cast including; George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia and many more, it skillfully blends humor, action, suspense and romance in a glamorous, relaxed atmosphere. The film plays with the codes of the detective genre, multiplying twists and turns, false leads and coups de théâtre.
Les Flambeurs, a dive into the world of compulsive gamblers
Directed by Robert Altman and released in 1974, it features two friends, Bill Denny and Charlie Waters, who share an all-consuming passion for gambling. Whether it's cards, dice, racing or boxing, they spend their time betting, winning and losing, without a care for the consequences.
The film presents itself as a realistic, disillusioned chronicle of the world of compulsive gamblers, who live in illusion, excitement and frustration. Altman adopts a naturalistic style, with a moving camera, improvised dialogue and a jazz soundtrack. He shows the complicity, but also the rivalry, between the two main characters, played by George Segal and Elliott Gould, who deliver remarkable performances.
Les Joueurs, a breathtaking thriller set in the world of poker
Released in 1998, it stars Matt Damon and Edward Norton as Mike McDermott and Lester Murphy, two poker-playing friends who find themselves in a perilous situation.
Mike McDermott is a law student who dreams of becoming a lawyer. He's also an ace poker player, able to read the game and emotions of his opponents. One night, he loses his life savings to Teddy KGB, a fearsome Russian gambler who runs an underground poker room. He decides to give up gambling and devote himself to his studies, encouraged by his girlfriend Jo.
But his former accomplice, Lester Murphy, nicknamed Worm, gets out of prison and contacts him. Worm is an inveterate cheat who owes money to numerous creditors. He takes Mike on a series of games across town. The Players is a film that plunges the viewer into the world of poker, with its codes, strategies, language and tension. The film's solid script blends suspense, action and drama.
The list goes on! Las Vegas Parano and The Cooler are also worth seeing. The casino is such a fascinating world that it provides material for directors and screenwriters to build captivating stories.
