The Polytechnic workers say the strike was called off due to the intervention of the institution’s governing council.

The polytechnic workers recently embarked on an indefinite strike over eight months’ unpaid arrears and the alleged ‘meagre’ subventions by the Oyo State Government.

Speaking to Premium Times about the strike suspension,  the chairmen of NASU and SSANIP, Raji Akande and Ajibola Oyetunde respectively said the strike was called off due to the intervention of the institution’s governing council.

According to Oyetunde, the governing council had a meeting with the union last week and gave them their words.

Corroborating Oyetunde, Akande said, “Our members have also decided that we should consider the suspension at the Congress. Although, some of the resolutions of the governing council do not go down with us.”

However, in a letter of suspension, the union sent to the governing council to inform them about their decision to call off the strike, the union appealed to the council to allow the Polytechnic management to admit students for the 2018/2019 admission.

The letter reads in part:

After much deliberations the leadership of the union appealed to the Congress, to allow the management admit students for the 2018/2019 admission, which we believe the process would be done within two months.

The union frowned at the letter sent by the governing council and have no trust in it. The council as matter of urgency should go back to the government to request for bail-outs to defray the (8) eight-month salary arrears.
