Students protest after being asked to pay N1,000

Students went on a violent protest in February over payment of some levies.

Students at the Polytechnic of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, March 31, reportedly staged a protest after the varsity authorities asked them to pay a sum of N1, 000 surcharge fee as they resume for their academic activities on April 4

The students were mandated to pay this 'reparation fee' to cover the damages done to the school’s property by the students during their last protest.

In a statement ‎signed by the school’s Registrar, Mr Hezekiah Feyitola, the N1,000 reparation fee was to cover the damages done to the school’s property by the students during their last protest.

Students went on a violent protest in February over payment of some levies, such as Insurance and ICT fees imposed on them by the Students’ Union ‎Government (SUG) executives.

The statement also asked the students are to login on to the website of the institution for the payment.

It added that each student would also bring a reference letter from eminent persons such as: a community leader, religious leader and either a senior public or civil servant.

The referee would pledge that the students would be of good conduct during their stay in the polytechnic, it said.

It added that the students should attach a passport-sized photograph of the person issuing the reference letter to the letter.

Also, the students must attach evidence of payment of the reparation fee to their letters which must be submitted at their departments, it said.

‎The statement advised students who could not complete their registration before the protest to do so within one week of resumption.

“Any student that fails to comply with the stated conditions will not be considered as students of the Institution,” ‎the statement said.

The statement said that management of the institution would continue to provide quality education to the students to make them the best in their various fields of learning.

It charged them to continue to imbibe the best behaviours.

The certificates and diplomas of the institution were usually awarded to its graduating students based on their good academic performance and moral conduct, the statement said.
