One of the legislators, Mr Tony Muonagor (APC Idemili North) said that the aim  of renaming the institution was to immortalise the late Biafran leader.

Other lawmakers who spoke  during plenary endorsed the decision.

It will be recalled that Ojukwu was until his illness and death the leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the ruling party in Anambra state.

This honour is coming just two months before the third anniversary of the former military governor’s death. Ojukwu died aged 78, on the 26th of November 2011, in the United Kingdom following  a brief illness. He was buried on Friday, 2 March in a mausoleum built in his compound at Nnewi.

As an evidence of Ojukwu's hero status, his body was carried around all five Eastern states, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra and Abuja, Nigeria's capital city.
