Polytechnic lecturers to begin strike on November 13

The lecturers in their meeting on Monday, November 6, in Abuja resolved to begin an industrial action to press home their demands.

Having issued 21-day ultimatum to the government to implement the agreement, the ASUP National President, Usman Dutse said the union will go on strike immediately after the expiration of the ultimatum.

Dutse accused Federal Government of treating Polytechnics with levity and using several verification exercises to delay payment of entitlement to the union members.

“Our union is therefore constrained to lament again that our sector is on the verge of collapse and needs all the emergency attention it deserves.

“Until now, it should be noted that the issues raised here today have been there since 2014 and none of them has since been concretely resolved to improve the sector.”

The Union's move, however, may ground academic activities in all government controlled educational institutions in the country to a halt if the Academic Staff Union of the Universities also begins its nationwide strike as threatened in November.

The agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU has been lingering for years. This has prompted the academic union members to intermittently paralyse academic activities in Universities across the country.
