Italian World Cup winner Vincenzo Iaquinta is standing trials in a court of alleged ties with a mafia gang.

Iaquinta is a former Udinese and Juventus striker who won the FIFA World Cup with the Italy national team in 2006.

The 36-year-old is among over 140 people who have been indicted on charges of aiding, or being members of, the 'Ndrangheta' Italy's most powerful organised crime network.

The 'Ndrangheta, based in Calabria deal in smuggling cocaine and other drugs into Europe from South America.

The striker was indicted for illegal possession of firearms, aggravated by intention to help the 'Ndrangheta.

His lawyer also revealed that his father Giuseppe, a businessman, was also indicted on the more serious charge of mafia association.

The first hearing in the trial will be on March 23, 2016.
