News of his exclusion from the Super Eagles team to play Tanzania in the 2017 African Cup of Nations came as a surprise to many.

Pulse Sports earlier reported that Enyeama opted out of the game due to pressing family issues though the actual reason was not revealed at that time.

Ace Nigerian sports journalist Colin Udoh who is close friends with the goalkeeper broke news of Enyeama's mother's death on Twitter.

"Unable to reach Enyeama so far, but have confirmed from close family sources that he lost his mum hence the withdrawal from Super Eagles," Udoh wrote.

During a media parley on Wednesday, September 2 Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh had revealed that Enyeama had opted out of Tanzania clash without an excuse.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) through their Twitter account confirmed Oliseh's statement, claiming that Enyeama has not informed them of his mother's passing

“Please note: Goalie Vincent Enyeama is yet to inform NFF or Super Eagles coaches about the loss of his mother,” the now deleted Tweet read.

The tweet was deleted after it drew criticisms from fans who accused them of being insensitive.

The 101-capped Enyeama posted a message on his Instagram page on Wednesday afternoon apologizing to Nigeria fans for missing out on the crucial game.

“So sorry I won't make it out there to wear this shirt,” Enyeama wrote alongside an artist’s impression of him in a Nigeria jersey.

“So sorry that I won't be standing there singing the anthem of my sweet NIGERIA. #WEARENIGERIA.

“I wish that this darkness didn't come in daylight. I wish that I could turn back the hand of time. I wish,I just wish that I could take away this pain. Let the rain wash away this pain,” the bereaved player concluded.
