As long as Novak Djokovic stands in Roger Federer's path, the Swiss great's chances of claiming an 18th grand slam title appear slim.

Such has become the world number one's dominance over Federer.

Djokovic made it seven wins in his past nine grand slam meetings with Federer with his 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-4 victory in the US Open final on Sunday.

As Federer stood in Djokovic's way early in the Serbian's career, the tables have turned late in the 34-year-old's.

Federer missed his chances in the New York decider - four of 23 break points converted told part of the story, with his two failures in the eighth game of the third set proving crucial.

Just like their recent major meetings, Djokovic simply had the answers.

From back-to-back Wimbledon finals to multiple semi-finals dating back to 2010, the 28-year-old has been able to respond to Federer's challenges.

His reward on Sunday was a second US Open crown, 10th grand slam title and third of 2015.

The head-to-head record may now read 21-21, but at grand slams it sits 8-6 in Djokovic's favour after once being 4-1 to Federer.

With fellow 'Big Four' members Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal seemingly steps behind the US Open finalists late in the year, further opportunities may await Federer.

The veteran's shot-making was on show throughout the fortnight at Flushing Meadows, while his SABR received plenty of attention.

Federer served well and moved even better, suggesting he was close to adding number 18 to his selection.

But Djokovic stood in the way and that has been a problem for Federer in recent grand slams, and is a record that will need correcting in 2016.

Federer may be showing no signs of slowing down, but another slam is unlikely as long as Djokovic is in his way.
