Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo has commented on his first Premier League goal for his new club Southampton FC.

The Nigerian international scored his maiden league goal for the Saints on Saturday in a home match against Leeds United at the St. Mary's Stadium.

Aribo's goal kicked off Southampton's comeback from two goals down to end the match at 2-2 and pick up their first points of the season.

Leeds United's Rodrigo had scored two second-half goals before Aribo capitalised on an Adam Armstrong assist to find the back of the net in the 72nd minute.

After the match, Aribo told BBC Sport in an interview that he was happy he could leave an impact on the game with his first goal for Southampton as the team strived to avoid consecutive defeats in their first two league games of the season.

The Nigerian international said: "I’m buzzing, I was able to leave my impact on the game. I’m happy I was able to help the team fight back."

The former Rangers star also applauded the fans at the St. Mary's Stadium on Saturday, noting that the home fans still supported the team even when they were two goals down.

Aribo 'surprised' to score with right leg

Furthermore, Aribo admitted that he was surprised he scored his first Premier League goal with his right leg, which happens to be his weaker foot.

“I think the fans stayed behind us even when it got to 2-0. Surprised I got my first Premier League goal with my right foot," the Super Eagles star concluded.

Aribo will be in action again on Saturday, August 20 when Southampton travel to the King Power Stadium to face Kelechi Iheanacho's Leicester City for their Matchday 3 fixture of the 2022/23 Premier League season.
