Last Saturdays fight between Cuba’s Erislandy Lara and Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez may have ended in a defeat of the former, however, the Cuban is not convinced he lost the match to a fair decision. The three judges at the night scored a 2-1 split decision to Canelo in what many touted as an unfair count.
Lara himself has spoken against the decision, demanding a rematch: he landed 107 total punches to Alvarez’s 97 and had a higher connect percentage but a , points count denied him his 20 professional win
“Before the decision was announced, I felt 100% confident I won the fight,” he said.
In 2007, Lara, together with defected from communist Cuba before the Pan American Games in the hope of greener pastures but was caught some weeks later in Brazil and was repatriated to Cuba, where he was banned from practicing boxing indefinitely. A second successive elopement attempt in on a speed boat 2008 ensured he had a shot at Professional boxing.
Lara continued about the denial against Canelo when he said:
The Cuban went ahead demanding for a rematch from the Mexican’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya:
an obviously displeased Lara concluded.
