Ogier had led the rally after Thursday's opening stage but failed to finish stage two due to suspected engine trouble, in a dramatic start to Friday's action.

Meeke won stage two by 31.9 seconds despite a broken handbrake to storm into the lead ahead of Dani Sordo and Jari-Matti Latvala.

Stage three saw Latvala take the honours as a puncture hindered Citroen driver Meeke but the Brit bounced back on stage four and five, winning both ahead of the Finn.

Sordo claimed stage six ahead of Meeke's team-mate Mads Ostberg, who finished in the top three in all but one stage on Friday to slot into second in Rally Argentina's overall standings.

With two days racing remaining, Meeke leads Ostberg by one minute, 8.4 seconds, while Latvala is 15.1secs further adrift.

Sordo (+1:54.2) and Elfyn Evans (+1:59.7) are the only other drivers within two minutes of Meeke.
