Being saved is a big deal for the believer and it is, in fact, the essence of Christ’s death and resurrection. Little wonder, it is the most-taught topic in the Body of Christ.
However, as much as the Bible is clear on it, many people still have varying opinions and diverse questions about it. How is a man really saved? Who is saved? Who can be saved? At one point or the other, every Christian has asked this question; sometimes, as a means of clarification and other times, as a result of doubt and fear about spending eternity in hell. Either way, the Bible shows us clearly what it means to be saved. So let’s look at the Bible?
Romans 1:16 (KJV)
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation for every one that believeth; to the Jew first and also to the Greek”
From this verse, we can infer something, the salvation of God is found in the Gospel of Christ and is available to everyone who believes. We can therefore say, that a person is saved when he has believed the Gospel of Christ because salvation comes through believing the Gospel.
Is that all? No.
When we study the Bible further, we also understand deeper what it means to be saved.
Romans 8:9-10 (KJV)
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead then thou shalt be saved.”
Too often we let go of what God’s word so strongly affirms and depend on what we have heard over the years or what we personally think.
A man is not saved by what he does good or what he does bad. At least, God’s Word makes us know that a man is saved only by his faith in the death and resurrection of Christ. The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the requirements of salvation.
Ephesians 2:8 (KJV)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Not of works lest any man should boast”
So, salvation is not what we received by what we did well. Many people wrongly affirm that getting to heaven is a function of good works, and while good works are very much necessary for the believer in Christ Jesus, good works are not what makes a person saved.
Good works are not the criteria to get saved. A man is saved when he has believed in the gospel of Christ. This is when we say that he has been saved by grace because it had nothing to do with His works in the first place.
For clarification, we may then want to ask; what exactly is the gospel?
1st Corinthians 15: 1-4 (KJV)
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
The gospel is the preaching of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. So when a man believes that Christ died for sins, Christ was buried and Christ resurrected from the dead, then he is saved. Nothing more, nothing less.
When is a man really saved? A man is really saved when he has believed the gospel of Christ.
