England opening batsman Adam Lyth will play for Yorkshire's second XI this week in a bid to stay in form ahead of the 2015 Ashes.

Lyth has played just one match since scoring his maiden Test century for England at the end of last month, making 17 and 67 for Yorkshire.

Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie revealed Lyth will play for Yorkshire's second-string side against Derbyshire starting on Tuesday to get some match practice, with the 2015 Ashes less than a month away.

Lyth will not be the only senior player stepping down to the second XI with Australia's Glenn Maxwell - who missed out on a call-up for his country's Ashes squad - also set to play.

"We see it as a great opportunity for some of the lads to play with the week off from the County Championship," Gillespie said.

"We want the lads to get some meaningful cricket, and there is no better facility than Scarborough.

"It also gives some of the younger players a great opportunity to learn from the experienced members of the squad.

"Adam was keen to play and get as much cricket under his belt before the Test series against Australia, and it is better than having a net."

The first of five Tests between England and Australia will start on July 8 in Cardiff.
