One person was in critical condition, CNN reported, citing the Columbus Fire Department. NBC earlier reported that two were in stable condition and the conditions of the others was unknown.

The university's emergency management service urged students and staff to shelter in place.

"Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College," the service said in a tweet.

A second tweet moment later told the public to "Continue to shelter in place. Avoid area of College."
