No more Lumia? Tech giant is hinting in that direction
Microsoft has been changing its mobile strategy for some years now. Last year, the tech giant wrote of most of its Nokia deal to the tune of $7.6 billion.
As part of its continuing plans to adjust its phone business, the company announced that it is selling its feature phone business to Foxconn for $350 million.
This is not entirely a surprising move when you consider that Microsoft has been winding down its feature phone business for at least two years. That aside, the company gave hints in its statement that it may not be releasing another Lumia phone again.
"Microsoft will continue to develop Windows 10 Mobile and support Lumia phones such as the Lumia 650, Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, and phones from OEM partners like Acer, Alcatel, HP, Trinity and VAIO," the company said in a statement.
The company says it will continue to develop Windows 10 Mobile and support existing Lumia phones as well as those created by third-party makers but there is no mention of continuing to develop new Lumia devices, or any hint of any future hardware for that matter.
This comment comes weeks after an internal memo from Terry Myerson, Microsoft's Windows and devices chief. In that mail, Myerson said Microsoft is committed to Windows 10 Mobile, and that the company is currently developing "next generation products". However, there was no mention of Lumia, and rumors have been making the rounds suggesting that the tech giant could release a Surface-branded phone next year.
What will happen to the Lumia brand? Will there be a Surface phone? It seems we will have to wait another year to find out. Stay with Pulse Tech to keep you updated with news in this regard, as they break.
