Senior man doing senior man things; Kelechi Iheanacho scores 2 goals to dump Manchester United out of the FA Cup
To draw positives from Leicester City’s injury carnage, Kelechi Iheanacho has seized the opportunity to find himself in the absence of first-teamers.
Iheanacho’s talent has never been in doubt. Still, over the years, from his formative years at Manchester City and his first two seasons at Leicester City, the Nigeria international lost himself from not just playing enough football.
But since December 2019, Iheanacho has consistently shown that he can play at this level.
Now, it’s not just proving that he can play at this level; he’s showing to be the real deal.
What has changed? It’s the confidence level. The more games he plays, the better he has become, which has filled him with what he needed the most.
He scored seven goals in 11 games for Leicester City since January 2021 and added to his tally as the Foxes dumped Manchester United out of the FA Cup on Sunday, March 21.
Iheanacho was so good playing off Jamie Vardy in the Leicester City attack.
He drew first blood for City in the `14th minute. Manchester United could not play out from the back properly, which led Fred to make a bad back pass to his goalkeeper.
Iheanacho raced onto the pass, rounded up Manchester United’s goalkeeper and calmly slotted into the net.
It was a big goal for Leicester City, who just came into the game. From that moment, Iheanacho looked dangerous.
For the rest of the game, he was the most dangerous Leicester City’s player in attack. Apart from Youri Tielemans’ run from midfield, the Foxes’ looked like scoring only when Iheanacho had the ball.
He held the ball up very well, played some excellent playoffs for Vardy, which should have scored from one of those balls.
United got back into the game before halftime, but Iheanacho again got an assist as Leicester City regained the lead.
He didn’t do much for the goal, though; with a simple one-two, Iheanacho set up the ball for Tielemans in midfield, and the midfielder made a run into the final third before drilling the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
The Foxes would have made it 3-1 shortly after good work from Iheanacho again. He played Vardy through with one of those passes from deep; Vardy does well to beat his marker but shot narrowly wide from an excellent position.
Four substitutions by Manchester United gave them the upper hand, and it did look like they would get a way back into the game before Iheanacho killed off any hope in the 78th minute.
He was very sneaky in the lead up to the goal of a freekick into the area by Marc Albrighton. Iheanacho intelligently snuck behind to head the ball from the back post into the net for his second of the game.
A brace completes another FA Cup delight for Iheanacho, who has found a lot of success in this competition.
With his goals on Sunday, the Nigerian has the most FA Cup goals by any African. He now has 12, same with Didier Drogba.
He's enjoying his football right now; seven goals in his last four games. The last time he played a game without scoring was in February.
He has recently gotten the nickname Senior man off his amusing conversations with Leicester City teammate and compatriot Wilfred Ndidi on Instagram.
On Sunday, he played like one.
