England off-spinner says he has taken my opportunity

England off-spinner James Tredwell said he feels he has gone some way to sewing up his spot in the XI, after leading the attack on day three of the first Test against West Indies.

Tredwell (4-47 off 26 overs) was the standout performer in the tourists' bowling attack in Antigua, helping England to a 104-run first-innings lead - which ballooned out to 220 by stumps.

His input was timely, given Moeen Ali - an off-spinning all-rounder - was included in the squad for the final two Tests in the Caribbean on Wednesday.

And Tredwell, playing in just his second Test after debuting against Bangladesh in 2010, said he felt he had done enough to hold his spot despite Moeen being fit again after a side strain.

"I think so," Tredwell told ECB's official website, when asked if he had done enough to keep his place.

"I had a bit of an opportunity in this game, thankfully, I hope I've taken the first half of it.

"I've got a bit more of a job to do, and hopefully get a result in this match and see what happens after that."

The 33-year-old said he understood his role as England's lone spin hand, as he picked up the key wickets of Kraigg Brathwaite and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

"I think sometimes that first innings can be a little bit easier at times, because you've got real clarity in your role," Tredwell said.

"I just tried to go for as fewer runs as possible, and thankfully picked up a few wickets along the way."

He added: "It was a pretty turgid wicket at times, and to build up some pressure was pretty key at one end, and to attack at the other."
