A man who had had too much to drink as a result of the New Year celebrations, has been reported dead after hugging a huge firecracker to his face and lighting it.

According to Daily Reports, Mr Vericio, had been soaked in alcohol when he pulled the firecracker to his face at about 12.10am in Manila, Philippines, this morning.

The firework had reportedly exploded with him still holding on, instantly sending him flying as soon as the fuse burnt down.

Vericio's live-in partner, Kristina Serrano, is reported to have called emergency services, explaining what had happened.

Sadly, despite the frantic efforts of the paramedics, Mr Vericio had reportedly died around 1.45am.

Philippines health secretary, Janette Garin, revealed saying:

"His jaw was shattered. He was so intoxicated he hugged the Goodbye Philippines."

Serrano had told investigators that she had earlier banned Vericio from lighting fireworks since he was drunk, but claims he had snuck out of their home before the incident took place, leading to his death.
