On the first shot of his first NHL game, the Maple Leafs' first overall pick scored his very first goal.

As if that was not enough, he quickly added another, and then another, and then another.

Matthews was the first number one pick to score two first-period goals in his NHL debut.

He is the first player to score four goals on his debut.

The first came on Matthews' third shift against the Ottawa Senators.

He crashed the net with fellow rookie linemates William Nylander and Zach Hyman, and some pretty passing around the crease eventually found Matthews wide open in front where he buried his shot past a helpless Craig Anderson.

He got the hat-trick less than 90 seconds into the second period to give the Leafs a 3-2 lead.

Matthews was left uncovered in the left faceoff circle and Morgan Rielly found him for the easy one-timer, and he had four before the second period was over.
