The German claimed triumph on the Granasen large hill with a score of 265.3 from his two jumps.

Austria's Stefan Kraft had led the way after the first round with a jump of 142.5 metres but the Four Hills winner was put under pressure in the second round as Freund netted 142.9 points for his final jump of 139m.

And Kraft could not deliver as he mustered just 124m for his second attempt, with his haul of 234 points only good enough for eighth place.

Slovenia's Peter Prevc was second with 255.1 points, while home hope Rune Velta (247.2) rounded off the podium places.

The result puts Freund 34 points ahead of Prevc at the summit. Kraft is a further 12 points back in third.

Freund can extend his advantage this weekend with two more large hill events to come in Oslo on Saturday and Sunday.
