At least 96,000 of the 105,000 students who applied to the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) for the coming academic session will not get admitted as the institution only has 9,000 spots available.
This much was revealed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who told journalists that that many students chose UNILORIN because of it's stable academic calendar and quality of learning.
"This year, we had 105,000 applicants. UNILORIN is the most sought-after university. University of Benin, which is second to us, had over 60,000 applicants," the VC said.
Ambali however said the 91% of the applicants will be disappointed.
“Unfortunately, we have capacity for 9,000. We just concluded the last batch of post-UTME screening. In the next few days, we will sit down and analyse the results.”
UNILORIN is rated high among Nigerian institutions, especially because of its stable academic calendars, having refused to participate in Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities (ASUU) strikes.
With UNILORIN and UNIBEN recording a total of 175,000 applications and having spots for less than 10%, it is clear that Nigeria’s educational scarcity is acute.
