8 billionaire tech entrepreneurs in India you should know about

This year, two of India’s tech startup kings – Binny Bansal and SachinBansal, Co-founders of Indian e-Commerce leader, Flipkart – make the billionaires club cut for the first time.

The advent of technology in the nineties and emergence of India as the backoffice of the world has sprung a new breed of Indian billionaires led by Azim Premji, Shiv Nadar, and NR Narayana Murthy of Wipro, HCL, and Infosys.

This year, two of India’s tech startup kings – Binny Bansal and SachinBansal, Co-founders of Indian e-Commerce leader, Flipkart – make the billionaires club cut for the first time.

In a list of the top 100 billionaires of India published by Forbes, there are eight tech moguls. Here they all are, in descending order of billions in net worth.

Azim Premji (Wipro): Premji is the founder of IT services company Wipro, one of India’s largest publicly traded companies. With a net worth of $15.6 billion, Premji is the overall third on the list of Indian billionaires. Wipro’s market capitalization is around $35 billion, making it the 7 largest IT services firm in the world. Premji began to run the company when his father died back in 1996.

Shiv Nadar (HCL Group, co-founder): Nadar, who has a net worth of $12.9 billion, is the co-founder of the HCL Group, which owns IT firm HCL Technologies. HCL Technologies is a publicly-traded company with a market capitalization of $22.1 billion. Navar is the sixth overall in the list of Indian billionaires.

N. R. Narayana Murthy: Murthy has a net worth of $1.9 billion and co-founded IT services company Infosys with six friends back in 1981. Infosys’ market capitalization is around $42.51 billion, making it India’s sixth largest publicly-traded company. Time magazine has dubbed Murthy as the Father of the Indian IT sector’. He stands fifty-third on the list of Indian billionaires.

S. Gopalakrishnan: Better known as Kris Gopalakrishnan, he is one of the seven co-founders of Infosys. He has a net worth of $1.7 billion and is sixty-seventh on the list of Indian billionaires.

Nandan Nilekani: Nilekani is the third Infosys co-founder on the list, ranking at number 69 on the overall list with a $1.6 billion net worth. After retiring from Infosys, he headed that Indian government’s technology committee.

Binny and Sachin Bansal (Flipkart): Binny, 32, and Sachin, 34, are the youngest members of the top 100 billionaires list with a net worth of $1.3 billion each. They both founded Flipkart in October 2007 as an online bookstore. Flipkart is currently valued at $15 billion and the Bansals are eighty-sixth on the overall list.

K. Dinesh: Dinesh is yet another Infosys co-founder. He has served in various project management positions and was responsible for worldwide software development efforts for Infosys.
