At the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the APC which held on March 27, 2018, President Buhari rejected an earlier resolution of NEC on Oyegun’s tenure; ruling that when Oyegun’s tenure comes to an end in June, he won’t be handed an extension.
Sources have been telling Pulse that these are the candidates on the shortlist of the APC to replace Oyegun:
1. Ogbonnaya Onu
A former Governor of old Abia State, 66-year-old Ogbonnaya Onu is currently Buhari’s Science and Technology minister.
He hails from Ebonyi State in Southeast Nigeria and has been described as a loyal party man who has no airs about him.
The APC isn’t particularly popular in the Southeast and Onu may be the man who takes the message of the governing party to a region where it is most despised.
Chances of winning: 4/10
2. Adams Oshiomhole
This khaki loving former Governor of Edo State, is the bookmakers’ favourite to emerge the next APC Chairman.
He is exactly the kind of guy you want in your corner during battle.
At the last general election cycle, Oshiomhole was a torn in the flesh of the APC and his bare-knuckled style was evident
Oshiomhole is often hands-on and takes no prisoners. It also doesn't hurt that he has Buhari's ears.
The APC would love to have him leading the onslaught against the opposition ahead of 2019.
Chances of winning: 7/10
3. Ken Nnamani
Nnamani was Senate President from 2005 to 2007 and is famously remembered for truncating then President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third term agenda.
In January of 2018, Nnamani spoke so well of Buhari at the commissioning of the Southwest zonal office of the Buhari/Osinbajo re-election campaign, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“Let them see what we are doing about corruption. The president has demonstrated this about his personal integrity. It is not something you inherit.
“So, I am in this occasion to appeal to all of us, that to make our party great, we must work together”, Nnamani said.
Like Onu, Enugu State born Nnamani will be tasked with winning the APC new fans in the Southeast and South-South geopolitical zones and he’s got loads of experience in matters like this.
Chances of winning: 5/10
