Our law enforcement still profiles people based on moral codes
The Nigerian Police has its method of profiling all wrong.
The death of the son of a PDP chieftain allegedly killed by his wife gave the NPF the great opportunity to show how it profiles people.
Their man of the hour, the Assistant Commissioner of Police Abayomi Shogunle tweeted the characteristics of a violent husband and wife.
According to his expertise, any woman who smokes cigarettes, shisha, weed and drinks beer in green bottles (WTF!) is bad.
For men, if a man uses illicit drugs and makes a living from illegal activities then there is cause for alarm.
To be fair Abayomi Shogunle gets it spot on for men. If you make your money illegally and are into drugs then you are not fit for marriage. You are not even a productive member of society.
His profiling of abusive women is troubling though. One fails to see the correlation between an abusive woman and a woman who smokes and drinks. Maybe if the ACP had backed up his profiling with enough research, maybe his tweet wouldn’t have been seen as comical.
In 2017, it's odd to think that the Nigerian Police is using on to stereotypes to identify potential and active criminals.
Growing up we were told that people who drank and smoked were bad people. That stereotype stuck with many of us until we got to see the real world and found out that smokers and drinkers are some of the best people around.
We might have grown up but the average Nigerian policeman hasn’t. This shouldn’t come as a total shock. Operatives of the special police unit SARS has been profiling young Nigerians for a while now. If you have tattoos, a beard, and dreadlocks you are going to be profiled as Yahoo boy and get arrested.
The Nigerian Police Force was recently ranked as the worst in the world. The NPF reacted swiftly saying the ranking was false.
However, if the ACP profiles domestic violence aggressors based on moral codes, you begin to wonder if the force is Deeper Life Bible Church.
