Laura Mvula , a British Soul Singer had once been a shy girl. Very shy she couldn't stand a crowd or even sing without a group. She found comfort teaching because she could actually be in the company of little ones. She never knew she could sing solo even when her teacher told her she could. Did she doubt herself? Maybe a lot more!
It took Laura a husband who loves her and a supportive family to get over her shyness and realize that, she actually does sounds like Adele and Nina Simone. However, her icons, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and the contemporary gospel music have been her tone for many years. If she was to begin as a solo artist, where and how was she going to start?
‘I couldn't find any big enough spot on the high street so I bought these two and put them together,’ she says, indicating the massive hoops-and-feathers combo.
Laura describes her music as ‘quiet and spoken’ a very rare description for an up and comer. She was allowed to grow up amidst classical music and got married to classical musician Themba Mvula who has been nothing but helpful.
‘I was surrounded by talented classical musicians and amazing composers and there I was, writing songs for vocal groups,’ she says. ‘I had a lack of confidence. My teacher encouraged me to perform. I didn't mind being in a group, I just didn't want to do it on my own.’
Guess she is now. Perhaps other pop star-types would have dispatched a stylist to source jewellery for them but Mvula is still adjusting to this music-biz malarkey and loves to keep it simple. She has been opportune to watch her idol Prince on stage and that changed her whole idea of being a superstar.
