It’s been referred to as the ‘dumbest song to ever become a hit in Ghana’. The country’s Under-17 soccer team have collectively danced to it, and all over the streets of Accra to Kumasi, everyone is feeling the single.

A new song titled ‘One Corner’ is rocking the streets of Ghana, and blowing up the social media space in the country. The viral record is released by an artist named Patapaa, a musician who was unknown in these parts before the explosion of the record. He features other up and coming musicians, Ras Cann and Mr Loyalty. It is produced by Morgan Beat.

The new song is enjoyed by both young and old individuals who take turns to show off their skills because of its danceable rhythm. ‘One Corner’ is powered by an interesting dance, which is hilarious in its concept.

When the chorus which simply repeats the phrase ‘One Corner’ begins, listeners make a mock dash to a hidden corner to dance to the record by rhythmically moving their hips in sexualized dance movements. When the song is played, it is customary to find a corner and start gyrating your waist in a funny way.

Videos of local celebrities around the country dancing to the record have flooded the internet, creating a true breakout hit for Patapaa. The singer is revelling in the moment with performances around the country and a media tour. He has also performed on the National broadcaster, TV3’s popular show Music Music, where he played a set which involved everyone in the studio doing the dance. The song has received endorsements from local celebrities including dancehall great, Shatta Wale who only has good words for the movement.

“Patapaaa one corner, no video, no air play, street support,” Wale wrote on Facebook. “Only God can do this no be man …God bless the real ones and fire bun da fake ones…One corner is my song.”

Patapaa has also been pictured with popular Ghanaian broadcaster and media mogul, Bola Ray, who shared a photo of them all together.

But as usual, where there are positives, there are also negatives. Other artists have been critical of the record, and why it has gained so much traction. An example is Kula, an up-and-coming artist who expressed disappointment at why an artist with ‘dumb’ music will go on to be really big. The musician shared his opinion on his Facebook wall and said: “I sing sensible songs all my life, I never meet [sic] Bola Ray. STRESS”

Another development has been the release of similar records. There have been recent reports in the media that popular Kumawood actor, Kwadwo Nkansah known in showbiz as Lil Win has also produced a new song titled ‘Corner Corner’. It has however been purported that the new song released by the Kumawood actor has many features as the “one Corner” song.

Patapaa Amisty, the composer of the song indicates that Lil Win is trying to rake in from the song by insisting that they have a remix version of the song to have the actor’s name on the record.

“He wants to record the song with the caption Lil Win X Patapaa. What is the meaning of the X?” the hitmaker quizzed.

Narrating the story to Joy News, Patapaa disclosed that after several failed attempts by Lil Win’s manager to have him agree to the deal, Lil Win contacted him personally to say that he was disappointed in Patapaa’s unyielding attitude.

According to him, Lil Win and his manager were so desperate to record the remix that they requested to have the song’s data sent to them via WhatsApp after realising that he was reluctant to meet them in Kumasi. After the revelation, some social media users have taken to the internet to burst out at Lil Win for what they consider to be his “plagiarism” of the popular song. Lil Win is believed to be already shooting a music video for his ‘Corner Corner’ song.
