Ex-Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has been released by English Championship club, Reading.
After failing to secure promotion to the English Premier League, Reading released the former Blackburn striker alongside Zat Knight, Jure Travner, Danny Guthrie, Ryan Edwards, Dan Lincoln, Jonathan Henly, George McLennan and Aleks Gogic.
Yakubu joined Reading in February 2015 scored only one goal during his time at the club.
Reading finished 19th in the Championship table and was out in the semifinals of the FA Cup.
The club according to the are releasing the players to enable manager Steve Clarke to sign quality players ahead of next season.
“As we enter our third year out of the Premier League, the club’s owners recognise the need for Steve Clarke to freshen his squad ahead of the new campaign, and this is the beginning of that process,” the club is quoted to say by the Reading Chronicle.
“After a period of financial instability and with the Financial Fair Play regulations in place, the owners are also making a concerted effort to get back to the sensible wage principles that have long been the club’s trademark.
“Striking the right balance will be key to a sustainable model for success.”
