Top seed Jelena Jankovic made light work of securing her place in the second round of the WTA Jiangxi Open on Wednesday, but Wang Qiang suffered a surprise second-round defeat.
Former world number one Jankovic is the most high-profile name in the WTA 125K Series hard-court event and the wildcard entry hit the ground running in her opening match against Riko Sawayanagi.
Jankovic, now ranked 25, needed just an hour and eight minutes to win 6-2 6-1 in a one-sided contest with her Japanese opponent.
Sawayanagi was broken five times by the Serb, who will be looking to build some momentum ahead of the US Open as she aims to improve on making to the last 16 in each of the last two years at Flushing Meadows.
Third seed Wang needed 80 minutes to see off Jang Su-jeong in the first round on Tuesday, but bowed out in the second round after she was beaten 7-6 (7-0) 6-3 by Han Xinyun.
Eighth seed Liu Fangzhou is through to the third round courtesy of a comprehensive 6-0 6-2 triumph over Miyu Kato.
Lu Jia-Jing came out on top in a hard-fought encounter with Japan's Junri Namigata which lasted three hours and 15 minutes, winning 6-2 6-7 (10-12) 7-6 (7-1).
Korean Han Na-Lae will also feature in the third round following her 6-4 6-3 success against Zhang Yuxuan.
