American tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams have received a wildcard entry from Wimbledon organizers to compete in the women's doubles tournament at the third Grand Slam of the season, scheduled from June 29 to July 12.
The veteran sisters, who boast an impressive 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals, are set to return to a court where they have collectively triumphed six times.
Serena Williams, 44, made her competitive comeback last week, playing doubles at Queen's alongside Canadian Victoria Mboko. She remains the only tennis player to have achieved the 'Golden Grand Slam,' securing all four majors and an Olympic gold in both singles and doubles.
Meanwhile, Venus Williams, 45, has participated in seven singles tournaments this year, including the Australian Open, but is yet to secure a victory. In doubles, her record stands at one win from five matches.
Regarding other wildcard recipients, Swiss star Stan Wawrinka, currently in his farewell season, received an entry into the men's singles draw for the only Grand Slam missing from his illustrious career. Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov was also granted a wildcard by the organizers.
On the women's side, the spotlight falls on Polish sensation Maja Chwalinska, who surprisingly reached the Roland Garros final after navigating the qualifying rounds. Chwalinska is notably the only non-British player to receive a wildcard for the main singles draw.
