What's the Former European Champion Chasing at Rally Paraguay?

Hayden Paddon is set to tackle his first gravel rally in a Rally1 car this week, but what are his expectations? The former European Rally Champion boasts significant speed and extensive experience on gravel, yet his inaugural 2026 outing on this surface with the i20 is only just now materializing.

Initially, Paddon and his co-driver John Kennard secured a deal with Hyundai Motorsport for three asphalt rounds of the World Rally Championship ("Monte Carlo," "Croatia," and "Japan") in 2026. However, they've now been granted a bonus opportunity to compete in Rally Paraguay this week.

The 2016 Rally Argentina winner has never competed in Paraguay, hasn't driven a top-tier WRC car on gravel since 2018, and hasn't raced in South America since 2017. Consequently, Paddon isn't letting the pressure get to him.

"Obviously, I'm incredibly excited to finally get a chance on gravel with the Rally1 car," he stated. "This wasn't part of the original plan for this year at all. Our initial contract was for the three asphalt rallies."
"Of course, we pushed hard to get this gravel opportunity, which is where we feel comfortable and where I think things will click and fall into place a bit more easily. So, yes, it's obviously a privilege to have this chance."

"Returning to South America is also special; I have some great memories from there 10 years ago. Paraguay, of course, is a different country with different stages, but the feeling should be similar. So, I have very special memories."
"We're heading into a rally where we essentially have nothing to lose. The objective is different from our asphalt events – this time, we want to drive flat out, give it our all, and achieve the strongest possible result for the team."
"Our gravel mileage has been limited to just two short tests, but from the very first kilometer, I felt at home in the car and on this surface. We learned on gravel, so there are no excuses. We'll make the most of the opportunity we have, and we're extremely excited about it."

Rally Paraguay will likely be Paddon's final appearance for Hyundai this season, as Esapekka Lappi will drive the third car two weeks later in Chile, and Dani Sordo is expected to compete in Sardinia – a rally he has won twice.
