Vinicius Junior: Ancelotti Chose Who Would Take the Penalty, I've Never Shied Away from Responsibility

Brazilian national team forward Vinicius Junior has shed light on why he didn't take the first penalty in their 2-1 World Cup last-16 loss to Norway. The "Seleção" were awarded a spot-kick in the 14th minute with the score at 0-0, but Bruno Guimarães failed to convert from the spot, a miss that ultimately proved fatal. Many wondered why Vinicius didn't step up, and the winger's explanation is that he deferred to the decision of head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"The coach decides beforehand who will take them. He chose Bruno. I've never been vain, I've never wanted to be the tournament's top scorer, and that's why Bruno took it. He was performing better than me, and that's why Ancelotti picked him. That's it. I've never shied away from responsibility," Vinicius stated.

According to Carlo Ancelotti, the decision on who would take the penalty was based on statistical data regarding players' success rates from the spot throughout the year. As the primary penalty takers were not on the field, the ball was given to Bruno Guimarães.

Brazil's number 7 assured that there was no dispute regarding the coaching staff's decision.

"There was no debate whatsoever. The coach chose Bruno to take it. We train every day, and he picked Bruno. I've never been vain, wanting to be the top scorer or the best in the tournament. I play for the team, and the right thing at that moment was for Bruno to take it. Unfortunately, he missed. That's football; we have to move forward with our heads held high. I wish Bruno a lot of strength for the tournament he had. Unfortunately, it will be overshadowed by that penalty," added the Real Madrid player.
