Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat was fourth fastest, with world championship leader Nico Rosberg and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso fifth and sixth respectively.

Rosberg had topped the timesheets in first practice and Hamilton responded by setting the pace in the second session, but Bottas ensured Mercedes were unable to complete a clean sweep ahead of qualifying on Saturday.

Mercedes' impressive showing will raise hopes they can make their presence felt in qualification and Sunday's race, which will be the first Austrian Grand Prix since 2003.

Hamilton looked set to be quickest for a second consecutive session, but Bottas had other ideas as he clocked a lap time of 1:09.848secs in the closing stages.

Daniel Ricciardo, winner of the Canadian Grand Prix last time out, was seventh quickest, with his Red Bull team-mate - and world champion - Sebastian Vettel 10th.
