Trophy and Medals Not Enough: FIFA Introduces Another World Cup Innovation

Winners of the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico will receive a new reward in addition to the trophy and gold medals. For the first time in history, the International Football Federation (FIFA) will award championship rings to the champions.

The world football governing body announced that one side of the rings will feature the World Cup trophy, while the other side will reflect the identity of the winning team.

The captain and head coach of the new world champions will receive a provisional version of the ring immediately after the final. A total of 30 rings will later be prepared for the members of the victorious squad.

FIFA also announced that it will produce 1996 commemorative rings for sale to fans. The awarding of championship rings is a long-standing tradition, particularly in North American professional sports leagues such as the NFL and NBA, as reported by DPA.
