Toyota stands as the sole manufacturer currently developing a car under the FIA's new World Rally Championship (WRC) regulations, set to take effect in 2027 – dubbed WRC27. The company has yet to disclose which production model will serve as the foundation for its new rally car.

The development program has already entered a critical phase, with final endurance tests scheduled for completion this summer before the homologation process begins.

Under the new FIA regulations, manufacturers must also supply their vehicles to customer teams. The WRC27 homologation rules mandate the production of at least 10 cars within 24 months of approval.

Furthermore, manufacturers must be capable of supplying a minimum of 10 race-ready WRC27 cars to customers each calendar year.

With less than six months remaining until the opening round of the 2027 World Rally Championship season in Monte Carlo, Toyota's new car is already generating significant buzz.

"There's certainly strong interest in the car. I think the main thing missing right now is that there's still some confusion among customers about where they can use the cars and which categories they'll be eligible for," stated Tom Fowler, Technical Director for Toyota's factory team, to motorsport.com.
"But we definitely have a lot of people who want to be on the list to buy a car. Some are still a bit unsure where they'll actually be able to use it."

Fowler shared that Toyota is currently finalizing its production schedule.

"Initially, the number of cars will be relatively small, but our goal is to reach a stage where we can produce cars for customer teams as well. The final production figures are still being determined, but we are working on them."

Toyota also acknowledges the challenges that come with being the first manufacturer to develop a car under the new regulations.

"There's still a lot of work to be done in terms of how we'll manage the entire process. We're in a difficult position because we're the first to create a WRC car for 2027."

The only team confirmed to receive two of Toyota's new cars for next year is Teo Martin, which also collaborates with the Japanese manufacturer in WRC2 and was the team that secured the Yaris Rally2's maiden victory in the World Rally Championship.
