Tottenham Falter Again, Crumbling in the Final Seconds

Tottenham once again failed to secure a Premier League victory, remaining in the relegation zone with five matches left to play. This time, Spurs were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Brighton in their 33rd-round clash, despite leading until the very end. However, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, the visitors salvaged a point through a Georginio Rutter goal.

This result means Tottenham's winless streak in the top flight now extends to 15 consecutive rounds, with their last three points coming late last year, at the end of December. It was the second match for new manager Roberto De Zerbi against his former club, but his former pupils from the south coast denied him a much-needed victory.

Furthermore, this draw postponed Wolverhampton's relegation. A home win for Spurs would have mathematically confirmed that the Wolves are dropping out of the top flight. After Leeds defeated Wolves earlier on Saturday, it is now almost certain that one of Tottenham, Nottingham Forest, or West Ham will be relegated to the Championship next season.

The Tottenham players put in a tremendous effort against Brighton and looked set for victory after a wonderful strike from Xavi Simons made it 2-1 in the 77th minute, but fate had other plans.

Earlier, Pedro Porro had put the London side ahead in the 39th minute following another excellent piece of play from Simons.

The hosts squandered a golden opportunity to double their lead just two minutes after the goal. First, the Dutchman hit the post, and on the rebound, Porro's shot was saved.

However, Tottenham's defence cracked at the end of the first half, just as it would at the end of the match. Kaoru Mitoma scored to make it 1-1 seconds before the break. Earlier in the first half, the woodwork had also come to the home side's rescue.

Spurs were proactive in their search for a second goal and found it in the 77th minute.

Afterwards, however, they failed to hold on to their lead, leading to the aforementioned late equaliser that sealed the 2-2 draw.
