Mundine left an indelible mark on history as the only Australian boxer to compete in four different weight classes. He held Australian championship titles in the middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight, and heavyweight divisions.
The pinnacle of his career was a WBA middleweight world title fight in 1974. His professional record is impressive: out of 96 bouts, he secured 80 victories, with a remarkable 64 by knockout.
After his son, Anthony, transitioned from a successful rugby league career to the boxing ring in 2000, Tony took on the role of his head coach. Under his father's guidance, Anthony became a two-time WBA super-middleweight champion (2003 and 2008), won the IBO middleweight title in 2009, and the interim WBA super-welterweight title in 2011.
Born in the town of Baryulgil, on Bundjalung Nation territory in New South Wales, Tony Mundine was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1986 for his exceptional contributions to sport and his work with Aboriginal youth. In 2005, he was inducted into the Australian Boxing Hall of Fame.
