Portuguese tennis player Tiago Torres, the reigning national champion, pulled off one of the biggest upsets at the Estoril Open, securing his spot in the quarterfinals. The athlete, making his ATP tournament debut thanks to a wildcard entry, defeated Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the third seed, with a dominant double 6-4.
In a match lasting 1 hour and 33 minutes, Torres, ranked 427th in the world, decisively overcame Tabilo, ranked 30th, who had received a first-round bye. With this victory, Tiago Torres becomes the fourth Portuguese tennis player to reach this stage of the tournament since its format change in 2015, joining the likes of João Sousa, João Domingues, and Nuno Borges.
In the next round, the Portuguese player will face Frenchman Hugo Gaston (world No. 109), who defeated his compatriot Titouan Droguet (world No. 114) 6-0, 6-3.
In his ATP 250 debut, Torres had already bested a higher-ranked opponent – Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, currently ranked 130th – and was visibly emotional after the match.
“I’m in a whirlwind of emotions. I still can’t believe I’m even playing in the Estoril Open, let alone that I won a round… It was incredible. I’d never played in front of so many people, maybe 200 or 300 at most. It was tough at the start,” admitted the Lisbon native who studies in the United States. “I even told my coach I was embarrassing myself. I’ll cry later, but not here. This is the result of many years of hard work, and many people who believed in me, like my father who traveled to watch me play,” he shared.
Tiago Torres's journey might not be over yet, as he is scheduled to compete again today in the doubles draw. Alongside João Domingues, he was given a lucky loser spot in the first round, where they will face the Portuguese duo of Jaime Faria and Henrique Rocha.
