Thousands of Spaniards poured into the streets to celebrate their national team's 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, international news agencies report.
Despite the impending workday, Madrid's central streets were packed, with car horns blaring. Celebrations in the capital had begun even before the match itself. Throughout the city, people watched the football game on giant screens in dedicated fan zones. Bars broadcasting the match were overflowing, many patrons arriving adorned with national flags.
Immediately after the final whistle, a thunderous roar from fans and prolonged applause echoed through central Madrid. Spaniards began dancing, jumping for joy, and embracing. The popular football chant, "Yo soy español, español, español" ("I am Spanish, Spanish, Spanish"), was frequently heard.
"I still can't believe it, we are champions! We are all so proud. My friends and I will celebrate all night," shared fan Cristina.
"We were favorites from the very beginning of the tournament. I'm happy, I'm thrilled, we are the best!" added Antonio.
Many local politicians, including Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, congratulated the Spanish team on their victory. The Prime Minister, alongside King Felipe VI of Spain, his wife Letizia, and their daughters Leonor and Sofia, watched the match from the stands in New Jersey.
