The Closest Earthling to an Alien: Karalis Leaps an Unbelievable 6.20m – But Mondo Goes Even Higher /VIDEO/
Armand Duplantis has shattered the world record 15 times. Emmanouil Karalis, for now, carries the heavy title of "the man who would have won everything if not for Mondo." Both athletes were in top form this week in Zurich.
The Swede and the Greek were the only competitors remaining after clearing 6.10 meters. Both had been flawless up to that point – though for Duplantis, 6.10m was only his third jump of the competition, while for Karalis, it was his fifth.
Mondo then cleared 6.15m on his first attempt, setting a new meeting record. Karalis then stunned the crowd by soaring over 6.20m on his first try – setting a new national record and improving his personal best by 3 centimeters.
He also became only the second man – alongside Duplantis – to clear that height.
Duplantis quickly responded, clearing 6.25m on his first attempt.
Karalis then attempted to set a new world record, but was nowhere near clearing 6.32m. The Swede then attacked the same height and, although he was closer than his rival, he also knocked the bar down.
The Greek was close on his second attempt, but clipped the bar on his way down, while Mondo didn't get the necessary height on his second try. This meant both had only one more chance to break the record in Zurich.
However, it proved to be a height too great for Karalis, whose third failure finally secured the victory for Duplantis. Mondo then took his third and final attempt. Gaining significant speed on his approach, he sailed over the bar but clipped it on his descent, knocking it down.
Both athletes, of course, are set to compete in the Diamond League Final in Brussels.
