With Pakistan chasing Bangladesh's 332-run total, Mohammad Hafeez led by example with an unbeaten 137 on day two of the first Test.

Mohammad Hafeez rediscovered his best form to hit an unbeaten 137 as Pakistan took control of the first Test against Bangladesh in Khulna.

Hafeez had mustered just 34 runs from the three one-day internationals and one Twenty20 fixture between the sides on the tour, but was the inspiration as Pakistan ended day two 227-1 in answer to the hosts' first-innings haul of 332.

The 34-year-old had earlier triggered Bangladesh's batting collapse.

The home side reached stumps on day one at 236-4 but, after Hafeez (2-47) had seen off Soumya Sarkar (33), they lost their remaining five wickets for just 27 runs.

Wahab Riaz (3-55) claimed the last two wickets of the innings to finish as Pakistan's leading bowler.

Hafeez, accompanied at the crease by Sami Aslam (20), then capitalised on excellent batting conditions to hit his third consecutive Test century, becoming just the sixth Pakistan batsman to do so.

Bangladesh's bowling attack failed to trouble Hafeez, who picked out 12 fours and two sixes in a brisk knock.

Hafeez's batting partners fed off his inspirational display and, after Aslam was caught behind off Taijul Islam (1-43) with Pakistan on 50, Azhar Ali (65 not out) stepped up to help chase down the target.

The duo's partnership climbed to 177 and counting, although Azhar was twice dropped by Mushfiqur Rahim, who had to leave the field injured following the second failed catch.

Hafeez, though, shows no signs of slowing down and may have his Test best score of 197 in mind as Pakistan seek to strengthen their position on Thursday.
