AFCON 2021: Taiwo Awoniyi ready to power Super Eagles in Cameroon

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi is ready to spearhead the Super Eagles to a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

In the absence of senior strikers like Paul Onuachu, Victor Osimhen, and Odion Ighalo, Awoniyi is likely to start up top for the Super Eagles.

The 24-year-old who would be making his AFCON debut, is ready to step into the shoes of the missing strikers.

Speaking to NFF TV, Awoniyi disclosed what he believes to be his secret weapon. Awoniyi said, “My strength is the power I put into my game, the fighting spirit in me, the willingness that you can always go as far as you want to go.

The Union Berlin striker also spoke on preparations as the first game against Egypt draws nearer. 

"I think it starts with how we set ourselves up as a country and how we prepare for our first game against Egypt,

"From the first game, we will know what step to take in the next games, but I think winning the first game is very important.”, Awoniyi said.

Although he acknowledged that the match against the Pharaohs would be a stern test, he sounded optimistic.

"I think everyone is aware of it already, and this is where our athleticism would come in,” Awoniyi said.

In 27 matches, the Union Berlin striker has scored 14 goals and provided three assists. 

Nigerians around the world will hope he can replicate his club form in Cameroon.
