An early try from Nonu gave Hurricanes a solid start, but by the break they found themselves 13-10 down as Chiefs " inspired by the boot of Damian McKenzie " fought back.

Ardie Savea restored the home side's lead five minutes after the restart and Nonu secured the win with his milestone try " the 32-year-old racing clear having intercepted a loose Chiefs pass.

Victory moves Hurricanes 13 points clear of the Chiefs in second place in the New Zealand conference, and all but assures their place in the play-offs.

The Hurricanes remain top of the overall table too, with Waratahs moving into second after a win of their own on Saturday.

Adam Ashley-Cooper gave Waratahs a flying start with a try in the opening minute - his score helping them to 13-6 half-time lead against Sharks.

Taqele Naiyaravoro added a second after 52 minutes before Bernard Foley took centre stage with the final 15 points to secure the 33-18 win.

Sharks had looked on course to reel their hosts in thanks to Frans Steyn's try just before the hour, but they saw a try disallowed for a knee in touch prior to Foley's late score.
