Former Super Falcons star Vera Okolo has revealed how they were poorly treated at the 2004 African Women’s Championship in South Africa.
Okolo who played for Delta Queens was part of the Super Falcons squad that won the 2004 African Women Championship in South Africa.
The former forward in a recent interview revealed that the Super Falcons played at that tournament with two pairs of white jerseys and one pair of green jerseys.
The coach of that Super Falcons side Godwin Izilien recently revealed that himself and his coaching crew are still being owed salary arrears of over $28, 750.
Okolo revealed that they had to protest before they were paid their bonus from that championship.
“We told them that we were not going back to Nigeria without the cup. And when the bonuses were not being paid after wining our matches, they became deeply worried and we rose to tell them not to allow that to weigh them down,” Okolo told .
She further revealed that the Super Falcons resorted to drinking Garri because of shortage of food during Algiers 2007.
“There was a time that the former Governor of Rivers State, had to intervene. He called (Peterside) Idah, when he heard of our travails, to feed the players and send the bill to him," Okoro said.
“It was like that until the money was now given to us and immediately, they said we should pack to go to Nigeria.
“Then President, gave us N1m each, after hearing what happened.”
