5 things you missed during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Cameroon

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Monday, September 4 played out a 1-1 draw with Cameroon at Yaounde in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Following their 4-0 win over Cameroon on Friday, September 1 in Uyo in the first leg, it’s one point gained in Yaounde for the Super Eagles.

Moses Simon scored for the Super Eagles in the first half before substitute Aboubakar Vincent equalised for Cameroon from the penalty spot.

These are five things you might have missed while watching the game on TV.

1. Half empty stadium

While Nigerians are still being let down by the atmosphere at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, there wasn’t much support either for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Stade Ahmadou Ayidjo Stadium in Yaounde.

The stadium was half filled although the home crowd still managed to be very loud.

2. Cameroon were good host

FECAFOOT, Cameroon’s football association were good hosts to Nigerians at the stadium. They provided good space for journalists with good wifi and working space in the stadium during the game.

After the game, the press conference was organised while journalists were given space and opportunity to talk to the players.

3. Cameroonians have not forgotten the Super Falcons win here

The Super Falcons of Nigeria beat Cameroon here in the same stadium in the final of the 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) to win the title.

This was in December 2016 and nine months after, that defeat is still fresh in the minds of the Cameroonians.

Almost all the Cameroonians we met at the stadium referenced that defeat and feared a repeat. Luckily for them, they escaped with just a draw.

4. Nigeria had two supporters club

The crises engulfing the Nigeria’s Supporters Club reared its ugly head at the Stade Ahmadou Ayidjo Stadium in Yaounde as two separate ‘supporters clubs’ were at the stadium.

The Dr Rafiu Ladipo-led club and the Vincent Okumagba faction sat on different sides of the stadium.

5. Victor Moses snub on Amaju Pinnick

While the game was going on, a video of Victor Moses snubbing a handshake from NFF president Amaju Pinnick became a trending item on Twitter.

The video was recorded during Super Eagles arrival in Yaounde ahead of the game which ended 1-1.

Pinnick and other officials were standing to welcome the players who were just disembarking a flight with handshakes.

After exchanging handshakes with other officials, Moses ignored Pinnick’s extended hand to set reports of a problem between them.

Musa also didn't acknowledge Pinnick in the video.

The NFF quickly shut down any rumour with a video of Pinnick with Musa and Moses downplaying the incident. "I don't know what you guys are talking about, I don't know what;s going on," Moses says in the video.
