On this very date (July 5th), during the 1994 World Cup, Bulgaria famously defeated Mexico in a thrilling Round of 16 match, decided by a penalty shootout. Stoichkov himself put Bulgaria ahead early, scoring past Jorge Campos to make it 1-0. He didn't even need to take a penalty in the shootout, as Borislav Mihaylov's heroics in goal sealed the victory before his turn.

Here's what Stoichkov posted on his Facebook profile:

“Tonight, Mexico plays England! And 32 years ago – against Bulgaria!

What a memory that was! A broken goal, a poor referee, and an incredible Bobby Mihaylov!

At Giants Stadium, the Bulgarian team was made up of giants! We all played fantastically! And the penalties? What penalties! For the first and only time, I was glad I didn't have to take mine!

Bulgaria was truly conquering America with its heroes!

And something else wonderful happened today – the Bulgarian Lion Nikola Tsolov conquered England!
