Stricker was in the USA team for the 2008, 2010 and 2012 Ryder Cups, but will take on a new role for the showpiece in Scotland - which will be staged begins on September 26.

And he is relishing the opportunity to play a part as Watson's side attempt to regain the famous trophy.

"It was an honour for him [Watson] to call me and just to be a part of it," Stricker said.

"Just to be there and try to have that opportunity to get the cup back, and to play for Tom, for all the guys, is a dream come true."

Stricker has been out of sorts this year, securing just one top-10 finish in 10 starts on the PGA Tour.

He reflected on the fact that he will be watching rather than playing in the Ryder Cup as an indication that he is no longer at the peak of his powers.

"It's a sign of the times, I guess, that you're moving on in your career," he added.

Raymond Floyd and Andy North were selected as Watson's other two assistants and the USA captain revealed that the trio will have a say over his wildcard selections.
