Former Microsoft CEO Ballmer had agreed a $2billion takeover deal with Shelly Sterling, wife of owner Donald Sterling, who was ordered to sell his stake in the Clippers after being recorded making racist remarks back in April.

Donald Sterling, who was banned from the NBA for life by commissioner Adam Silver in the wake of his comments, saw his attempt to block his wife's right to sell the team thrown out by a court late last month.

And the saga has finally been brought to a close with official announcement of a deal involving Ballmer.

An NBA statement read: "The transaction in which Steve Ballmer purchased the Los Angeles Clippers closed today following the entry of an order by a California court confirming the authority of Shelly Sterling, on behalf of the Sterling Family Trust, to sell the team.

"The NBA board of governors previously approved the sale and Ballmer is now the Clippers governor."

The completion of the takeover ends Sterling's 33-year ownership of the Clippers, with the franchise reaching the play-offs just seven times in that period.

Ballmer, 51, is estimated to have a personal fortune of $20.7bn.
